Pendant lights are commonly positioned around 700 to 900 mm above the benchtop. The ideal height depends on the pendant size, ceiling height and whether the fitting obstructs the view across the bench.

Two or three pendants are commonly used over a standard kitchen island. The correct number depends on the bench length, pendant diameter and the spacing required between each fitting.

A pendant or chandelier measuring approximately one-half to two-thirds of the table width often provides balanced proportions. The fitting should remain narrower than the table to reduce the risk of people bumping into it.

An integrated LED pendant has a built-in LED light source and driver. A replaceable-globe pendant uses a separate globe that can be changed when required.

A pendant usually features one main shade or light source suspended from the ceiling. A chandelier generally has multiple arms, branches or decorative light sources and is often larger in scale.
