LED Downlight Modules FAQ
Your guide to a confident purchase
What is the standard cut-out size for an LED downlight?
A 90 mm ceiling cut-out is one of the most common sizes used in Australian homes. However, cut-out requirements vary between products, so always check the specifications before purchasing or replacing a downlight.
What is the difference between recessed and surface-mounted downlights?
Recessed downlights sit inside a cut-out in the ceiling for a streamlined finish. Surface-mounted downlights attach directly to the ceiling and are useful where there is limited ceiling space or a cut-out cannot be made.
How many lumens should a downlight produce?
Around 700 to 1,000 lumens per downlight is commonly suitable for general residential lighting. The number required will depend on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle and spacing between fittings.
What colour temperature is best for downlights?
Warm white around 3000K creates a softer, more relaxed atmosphere. Neutral white around 4000K provides a clearer, more practical light, while 5000K is brighter and cooler in appearance.
Can LED downlights be dimmed?
Only downlights specifically marked as dimmable can be dimmed. The downlight driver must also be compatible with the wall dimmer being used.
