Choose outdoor heaters based on the installation location, exposure to weather, IP rating, material, brightness and desired lighting effect. Outdoor areas may need wall lights, spotlights, floodlights, bollards, step lights or garden lighting depending on whether the aim is safety, ambience or security.

The required IP rating depends on how exposed the fitting is to rain, dust and moisture. Covered patios may not need the same protection as exposed walls, gardens or driveways. Always check the product IP rating and make sure it suits the exact installation location.

Warm white is often used for patios, entrances and decorative outdoor areas because it feels softer and more inviting. Neutral white can suit pathways, driveways and general visibility. Cooler white may be preferred for security lighting where a brighter, more functional appearance is needed.

Coastal areas can be harsh on outdoor fittings due to salt air and moisture. Stainless steel, marine-grade finishes or suitable powder-coated materials may perform better in these conditions. Always check the product material, warranty conditions and installation guidance before using fittings near the coast.

Sensor lighting is useful for entrances, side paths, garages, driveways and security areas. It can turn on when movement is detected, improving convenience and visibility. Check the sensor range, detection angle, timer settings and mounting height to ensure it suits your space.

Outdoor wall lights are mounted to buildings, bollards are freestanding pathway or garden lights, and spike lights are installed into soil to highlight plants, paths or landscape features. The right option depends on the surface, wiring access and lighting effect you want.

Some outdoor lights are dimmable, but this depends on the fitting, globe or integrated LED driver. Dimming also requires a compatible dimmer and suitable installation setup. Always check the product specifications before planning outdoor dimming, especially for integrated LED and sensor fittings.

Most hardwired outdoor lights should be installed by a licensed electrician. Outdoor installation must account for weather exposure, cable protection, IP rating, mounting surface and safe wiring. Solar and some portable outdoor lights may not require hardwiring, depending on the product.
