The best downlight option depends on your ceiling type, room layout and the look you want to achieve. Recessed downlights create a clean, built-in finish, while surface mounted options work well where ceiling cavity space is limited. Also check beam angle, lumen output, trim colour and cut-out size.

Warm white around 3000K is popular for bedrooms, lounges and relaxed spaces. Neutral white around 4000K is commonly used in kitchens, bathrooms and general living areas. Cooler colour temperatures can suit garages, laundries and task areas. Tri-colour downlights are helpful when you want flexibility at installation.

The right number depends on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle, lumen output and how bright you want the space to feel. Larger rooms usually need more fittings for even coverage. A lighting layout plan can help avoid dark spots and prevent fittings being placed too close to walls or furniture.

For replacement recessed downlights, measure the existing ceiling cut-out before purchasing. Common cut-out sizes include 70mm and 90mm, but sizes vary by product. Choosing the wrong cut-out can leave gaps around the fitting or require ceiling modification, so always check the listed cut-out diameter.

Many LED downlights are dimmable, but they need to be paired with a compatible LED dimmer. Always check the product specifications for dimming details. If replacing older halogen downlights, your existing dimmer may not work correctly with LED fittings and could cause flickering or poor dimming performance.
