12V LED Strip FAQ
Your guide to a confident purchase
How do I choose the right 12v led strip?
Choose 12v led strip based on indoor or outdoor use, voltage, brightness, colour temperature, length, dimming needs and the type of profile or diffuser required. LED strip can be used for cabinetry, shelves, coves, stairs, alfresco areas and feature lighting when planned correctly.
What is the difference between 12V and 24V LED strip?
Both 12V and 24V LED strip can work well, but 24V is often preferred for longer runs because it can help reduce voltage drop. The best option depends on the strip length, wattage per metre, driver size and installation layout.
Do I need an LED profile for strip lighting?
An LED profile can help protect the strip, improve heat management and create a cleaner finished look. Diffusers can soften visible LED dots and reduce glare. Profiles are especially useful under cabinets, in shelves, along stairs and anywhere the strip is visible.
How do I choose the correct LED driver or power supply?
Add up the total wattage of the LED strip run and choose a compatible driver with suitable voltage and capacity. It is best to allow a safety margin rather than running the driver at full load. Also check whether dimming or smart control is required.
Can LED strip be dimmed or controlled?
Many LED strips can be dimmed or controlled with compatible dimmers, controllers, remotes or smart systems. RGB, RGBW and CCT strip require controllers designed for those strip types. Check voltage, channel type and wiring requirements before ordering accessories.
Can LED strip be used outdoors?
Weatherproof LED strip can be used outdoors when it has an appropriate IP rating and is installed correctly. Outdoor strip should be protected from physical damage and paired with suitable drivers, connectors and profiles. Always check the product rating for exposed or covered applications.
Can LED strip be cut to size?
Many LED strips can be cut at marked cutting points, but the cut spacing varies by product. Cutting in the wrong place can damage the strip or stop a section from working. Plan the run length, joins, cable exits and driver location before installation.
Does LED strip require an electrician?
Some low-voltage LED strip installations can be straightforward, but hardwired drivers, outdoor wiring and complex control systems should be handled by a licensed electrician. Professional installation is recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor areas and any concealed or mains-connected wiring.
