IP44 may be suitable for a sheltered outdoor area, while IP54 or IP65 is generally better for more exposed locations. Areas subject to heavy rain, water jets or ground moisture may require a higher rating.

Warm white around 3000K creates a welcoming effect around entrances, patios and gardens. Neutral white around 4000K provides clearer visibility for pathways, garages and security lighting.

Outdoor wall lights are commonly mounted around 1.6 to 1.8 metres above the ground. The correct height depends on the fitting, doorway, wall size and intended beam coverage.

Powder-coated aluminium, brass, copper, marine-grade stainless steel and UV-stabilised polymers are commonly used outdoors. Coastal locations require products specifically suitable for salt-air environments.
