5 tips for lighting your garden

When the sun’s shining, it’s great to while away the hours in the garden. At night time, too, the great outdoors is the perfect place for late drinks and barbecues that go into the early hours.

No one wants to hang out in the dark, so it’s important to consider how you will light your garden when the sun goes down. Not only will this make it look great from outside your window, it will create an atmosphere that you and your family will want to retreat to night after night.

If you don’t know where to start with garden lights, here are five tips to consider:

Light your decking

Deck lighting is the ideal way to highlight one of your garden’s main features. In-ground lights can be fixed into the timber structure to make a communal space feel warm and welcoming.

Outdoor Lighting

Make shrubbery glow

If you’re proud of your plants, why not show them in the best light. Placing lighting in or around your shrubbery can make for a dynamic lighting experience, as emitted beams moves with the foliage.

Play with shadow

Keep a bit of mystery in your design by using as much shadow as you do light. This lets you hide sheds and other less attractive garden utilities, which in turn makes the features you do choose to illuminate even more stunning.

Think about bollards

The borders between your walkways and planted areas can be brought out with bollard lighting?or lovely spike lights. This indirect lighting solution casts beams towards the ground instead of up in the air, making it a subtle feature to your home. During the day, the aesthetic design of the post makes it an attractive addition to your garden.

Led Lights

In-Ground Lights

Go vibrant

Garden lighting is not all about keeping a natural look. Playing with various colours can have a great effect against both foliage and buildings.

How to keep your home cool this summer

Would you rather be too hot or too cold? It’s an interesting conundrum. While heat is often related to beaches, holidays and generally great weather, being too hot can be a real struggle.

After all, it’s often easier to get warm than it is to cool off. Or is it? There are some great ways to keep our homes cool this summer, and one of the all-round best and easiest is with a ceiling fan.

These offer a distinct number of benefits for both body and mind. Here are three reasons to consider a ceiling fan as we get into the hot and sticky summer months.

They make you more comfortable

Ceiling fans don’t actually cool a room, but they do a great job of making you feel a lot more comfortable. Much like opening a car window and feeling the breeze doesn’t mean the air is becoming cooler inside the car, it does help to evaporate moisture from the skin, meaning your body temperature drops.

Having air circulated around your room is a great way to keep your home habitable when the sun is blazing. They are not just for seasonal use either; in winter, a ceiling fan will circulate warm air around a room, too.

They help reduce energy costs

If you own an air conditioning unit, you will know the expense of running it throughout the summer months.

A ceiling fan uses much less electricity than your typical AC unit. It also moves the cooled airaround the home, so if you want the ultimate cooling effect, combining both means your air conditioner can usually be turned down by a few degrees.

They add style

A ceiling fan is a timeless piece. Contrary to popular opinion, they can be used indoors or outside, meaning practically any room or space in your house can get all the functional benefits of a ceiling fan, while getting an aesthetic boost in the process.

We have a huge range of fans in our online store. Many of our variants also include lights, making them even more multifunctional.

Australia as much as anywhere will get into the spirit by hanging?a range of Christmas lights around our houses.

1.?White Christmas (and blue, green and red)

One of the advantages of buying LED Christmas lights is their versatile, controllable glow. No longer do you have to choose a set theme for your tree; instead, use colour-changing LED Christmas lights to make your home a canvas of different hues.

Your tree will be a sea of playful colour, as strings of lights interact, pulse, wave and glimmer while?they weave around the branches.

2.?Deck the halls

Why should our trees have all the fun? There are some great things you can do with the rest of your interior.

Draping lights along a banister, around a curtain rail or suspended from a mantelpiece are just some ways to add a bit of cheer to sometimes underused areas.

Another tip is to hang lights near a mirror to create an interesting reflection effect throughout your room.

3.?Fairy lights of New York

Just like the city famed for being constantly switched on, many Aussies will take the opportunity to spread the joy to their exterior spaces.

By purchasing LED lights suitable for the outdoors, your home can be transformed into a hub of colourful?festivity for you and?your neighbours to enjoy.

How choosing the right colour temperature can change a room

When designing any room in your house, it is important to take some time and choose colours that will suit the space.

It’s unlikely that you would simply slap any old paint colour on your walls and hope it creates a comfortable living space – instead, you should spend time and use paint testers to find a hue that will best suit each environment.

This is similarly important when choosing the way a room is illuminated, with different colour temperatures able to create a drastically varied ambience.

No one wants to be glared by bedroom lights first thing in the morning, and the glow from your fridge should never be the brightest way to illuminate a kitchen.

To make it more difficult, choosing a suitable colour temperature is not as simple as buying a tester. LED Lights?have tumbled in price significantly over the past few years, but that doesn’t mean you should buy a selection of lights in each temperature to run tests on each room!

Instead, knowing what you are buying will save time and money. Here are three common colour temperatures to consider for your next purchase:

Warm white

Colour temperature relies on the Kelvin (K) output of a light source. At around 2,700K a light produces a ‘warm white’ glow, with the colour taking on a yellowish tint. Warm white is effective in creating a subtle and dusky tone, while still providing enough white light to prevent a room from becoming too dark.

Cool white

For those who want their rooms to have a little more reflective sparkle, cool white gives a brighter light source with a completely different tone. The temperature operates at around 4,000K and produces more blue light in its spectrum. With less yellow light, the colour can be more active and less soothing, so perhaps a better option for kitchens, garages or bathrooms.

Daylight

At around 6,500K, daylight is close to natural light. While the intensity might not be a preference for some, many of our dimmable LED globes and?products offer this temperature as an option, allowing you to choose between a range of colour settings.

IP Ratings Demystified

This light has an IP Rating – what does it all mean ?

IP rating stands for Ingress Protection or International Protection. This is a standard rating that determines how waterproof and dust / solid proof a light fitting is.

rainygarden

The first digit in an IP rating refers to how dust proof a fitting is and the second digit refers to how waterproof a fitting is. With the 2 numbers combined this will determine the likelihood of any foreign objects getting into the light fitting and possibly damaging it.

dust

Below is a table, which represents the various levels of protection as well as what each number means. Generally speaking, high-end outdoor lighting will be IP rated 67 or 68, however a rating of 44 will be suitable for general outdoor use though preferably not exposed directly to heavy rain.

Number First Digit Number Second Digit
Protection against ingress of solids Protection against ingress of water
0 No Protection 0 No Protection
1 Protected against solid objects over 50mm in size. Eg large tools 1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water
2 Protected against solid objects over 12mm in size. Eg fingers and hands 2 Protected against direct sprays of water with light tilted 15 degrees from vertical – light rain
3 Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm in size. Eg wires and small tools 3 Protected against direct sprays of water with light tilted 60 degrees from vertical – strong rain
4 Protected against solid objects over 1mm in size. Eg wires and bugs 4 Protected against sprays of water from all directions – gentle spray with a hose pipe
5 Limited protection against dust ingress – harmfull amounts cant get in. 5 Protected against low pressure jets of water from all directions – strong spray with hose pipe
6 Totally protected against dust ingress – dustproof ! 6 Protected against strong jets of water from all directions – cleaning light with high pressure hose
7 7 Protected against temporary immersion in water no deeper than 50cm – bit of flooding
8 8 Protected against continuous immersion in water no deeper than 100cm – pool or pond light
